Sunstone Feldspar comes in several different types which can be somewhat confusing. The most common sunstone used in faceting comes from the Oregon area in USA while there is another source in Tanzania which produces more cabbing grade material. The Sunstone from Oregon comes in a variety of colours with the most common being a colourless, light peach yellow type and the more expensive having areas or zones of colour which could be red or green. Sunstone is sometimes accompanied by inclusions of various types which can provide an interesting effect called schiller effect. This is a light reflection off copper platelets within the stone. Too much and too random would make the stone cabbing grade usually, but as with everything, artistry is in the hands of the artist. |
